Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Surgery

Print

What is it?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to restore energy and toning, as well as reshape the eyelids.

Who is it for?

Blepharoplasty is for people who want to eliminate imperfections or deformities of the eyelids.  It can be performed on both the upper and the lower eye lids.

At what age ?

This is dependent entirely on the patient’s need to look in a certain way, at a given age. From our experience, we know that the younger skin tissues respond better to the treatment. Younger the patient, the more convincing the result of this procedure.

Specifically speaking, the trans-conjunctival method of surgery, is targetted primarily at removing fat herniations (pockets) in the eyelids of young adults.

Scars

The treatment involves removal of pockets of fat, hernias, excessive skin and muscle in and around the eye lids. The whole procedure takes about an hour and a half, and leaves no visible scars.

The surgical incisions are made either in the natural folds of the skin (in case of the upper eyelid), or amidst the eyelashes, along one of the wrinkles of the crow’s feet (in case of the lower eyelids). Additionally, the trans-conjunctival incision method of Blepharoplasty (inner surface of eye-lid), allows the removal of under-eye bags, without leaving any visible scars.

Anesthesia

The surgeon and the anesthetist will be jointly determining the type of anesthesia to be used in any given situation, but in general, a local anesthesia potentiated by a neuroleptanalgesic is considered sufficient for this procedure.

Recovery

During recovery, patients experience the presence of edema (swelling) accompanied by bruising, but this will gradually disappear over 10 days.

A mild feeling of stretching or tension may be experienced in the eyelid region.  There may be some discomfort while closing the eyes,  for about 48 hours.

Complete rest is essential for the first few days; the patient can resume normal activity after about 10 days post-surgery. Driving is prohibited for 5 days. The sutures are removed after about 5 days as well.

Results

This surgical procedure works for both men and women, and is the most dramatic of all the cosmetic procedures. It restores the lustre to the patient’s eyes without any visible scarring.

Especially when performed in the 30’s, in conjunction with a Facelift, Blepharoplasty can do wonders for the overall appearance of the face.
