What is it?

Facelift is a surgical procedure that can correct secondary deformities in the face and neck area caused by aging. Modern techniques allow this procedure to be localized to very specific regions – forehead, eyes, cheekbones, cheeks or neck, as per the patient’s requirement. Facelift technology has undergone a significant evolution over the past decade. This allows the surgeon to not only restore the skin’s natural firmness and tension, but also plump up its volume.

The procedure treats the sagging facial and temporal (lower area of the neck) skin and muscles, without altering the natural appearance of the face. As a result of this treatment, patients find their faces, refreshed and rejuvenated. And these results last for a long time too!

Other procedures that can be combined with Facelift to achieve wonderful results are, eyelid surgery, reduction of cheeks, and chin augmentation.

At what age?

Generally, the procedure is performed in a person over 45 years of age. Several factors like the patient’s face, the condition of the skin, frequency and duration of exposure to sunlight, smoking habits, and the patient’s preferences, determine the treatment and approach.

During the pre-surgical consultation, the surgeon will be able to provide a simulation of the treatment, either by stretching the patient’s facial skin in front of a mirror and showing them how it looks, or by using computer-aided tools. The simulations help the patient to visualize clearly, the results of the treatment.

The post-surgical scars are barely visible; they are well concealed within the hair and around the ears. Even if there are any minor scars, they usually fade after the first year.

This procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The duration of surgery is 2 - 4 hours, depending on the technique and the procedures.

Post-treatment hospitalization may vary between 24 to 48 hours.

For 8 - 10 days after the surgery, the face may be swollen, with some bruising. The extent of bruising varies from patient to patient. A mild tension may be felt in and around the ears, accompanied by a transient decrease in the sensitivity of the cheek area. The sutures are removed between the 7th and 15th day. The patient will be expected to refrain from social and professional activities for at least 3 weeks. The scars will heal and fade over time.

The final result starts showing from the second month onwards. By this time the face acquires its natural look. By employing the right technique, the results of a Facelift can be made to last for as long as 8-10 years.
